In this weekend course, participants learn foundational habits for canoeing with a partner.
You'll learn the essentials for safely and competently paddling a canoe with a partner, as well as transporting a canoe, weather considerations, and equipment, preparing you for safe and enjoyable day-trips this summer.
You’ll learn how to
- Lift and carry a canoe with a partner
- Transport a canoe safely on a vehicle
- Carry to the water
- Confidently get in and out of the canoe
- Launch the canoe
- Canoe control: Forward, reverse, stop, turns, pivots, sideways displace
- Land the canoe at a dock or shoreline
You will also learn theory, such as
- Safety
- Equipment selection
- Weather considerations
- Some canoeing history
This two-day course follows the Basic 1 to 3 program from Ontario's Canoeing and Kayaking Association (ORCKA). Participants who perform the tasks satisfactorily will earn a Canoeing Basics 1 to 3 badge, preparing them for further canoeing progression with ORCKA, including Level 4: Solo Canoeing.
