Not your typical solo canoe seat, SlackSeat is something different.

SlackSeat allows the solo paddler to kneel comfortably in the canoe while maintaining a low centre of gravity. The adjustable cam buckle system allows for natural shifts in paddling positions, so you can paddle the way you want, without sacrificing your knees and ankles.

Sit in the middle of the canoe for stability, or heel it over so the gunnels touch the water–the choice is yours.

Canoe seats and kneeling thwarts typically force the solo paddler to stick to one position, the center of gravity needs to be higher than is ideal, and they’re usually installed with nuts and bolts and unsettling drilling noises (i.e. permanent changes).

SlackSeat’s universal gunnel grips mean you don’t have to make any permanent changes to your canoe.

Doubles as a third seat for the kids!

Be careful! When you sit on SlackSeat, it produces inward pressure on the hull of the canoe. SlackSeat should be used close to a yoke or thwart in order to compensate for this inward pull, and it’s up to you to decide whether or not your specific canoe can handle the inward pressure of your weight.

This product is a game changer for any solo paddling

I absolutely love it

A simple design easy to use and carry

It's comfortable and allows me to move position and location in the canoe with ease so whether I am lake crossing, paddling with or without a load or just dancing on water this is my seat of choice.

Highly recommend it

Offered the slackseat to Instructor candidates paddling solo and they really liked the height and ability to paddle.

I was hoping to be writing a glowing review right now, but maybe I can amuse you instead.

I'm a novice. I can't think of much that seems more elegant than a heeled over canoe deftly piloted by an experienced canoeist. I was hoping that the slack seat was going to get me there. Alas... that was not to be.

My solo canoe is so narrow at the gunwhales that the slack seat was still too long at it's shortest adjustment. I was still sitting on my heels with a totally slack seat between my butt and feet. (See what I did there?)

Then, to my embarrassment, I took a swim when getting out of the canoe. Guess what? The slack seat doesn't float. I dove, but couldn't find it.

That said, it looks like a great product for those with a wide tandem canoe. The olive color was a good match to my CCS seat pad. The gunwhale hooks appear to be strong and coated with a protective rubber that looks like patterned heat shrink tubing.
It's attractive and looks strong enough to do the job.

I think that the sewing, although adequate for its purpose, could be a little neater... and the trimming of the rubber as well.

As the price includes shipping and duties, I think it's a fair value. Especially considering there's nothing else like it. I was hoping to find a way to shorten it to work with my canoe. And, of course I wish that it floated.

It appears to be exactly what it says it is. I haven’t used it yet. It is well made.

Looks very well made.
Happy that it is wider than I thought so I should be able to sit center.
Anxious to try it… as soon as my bad knee can bend far enough . lol !

I tried it out for the first time on a camping trip last week. It worked well initially, and I was able to solo paddle from various positions within the canoe, and move fore or aft to adjust for the wind direction. So far, so good. About 20 minutes into my paddle, the seat collapsed and I found myself sitting on my arse on the bottom of the canoe. It turns out that the two mounting brackets on the gunwales bent and opened up until they finally released. I had to squeeze them together again in order to finish my paddle. I am an average-sized man - 5'10", 180lbs - so the brackets should have been designed to easily hold me. I am disappointed with this, and fear that repeated bending and straightening will soon cause the brackets to snap in half, and then I will be out of luck. Two stars: the concept is excellent, but the execution is poor.

Hi Brian, I'm sorry to hear about your experience with the gunnel grips bending on your SlackSeat. I'm in the midst of updating the bracket design with a thicker gauge steel and will happily ship you a replacement set when they're available. In the meantime, I weigh about 195 lbs and I've had luck with bending the brackets slightly past the original shape (so they're a tad inward).

I do most my paddle kneeling and Slackseat really is a game changer for me. I can stay much longer in the desired position focusing on my paddling rather than my comfort. I use it in a way that I sometimes push it back along the gunwales when the situation need me to switch stance and back on easily afterwards. A great and well made product made here in Canada in addition to that. I recommend greatly.

I’ve used it once and found that it slides down the gunwhales as I paddled. I need a way to tie it in place.

Gave it a quick trial in a friend's boat and it works great! The material and workmanship feels very sturdy and it works very effectively to relieve pressure on the knees and ankles, while allowing you to maintain a low centre of gravity. Looking forward to trying it out on my own boat in a couple of weeks after I complete repairs on it.
